Happy Anasazi Bean Day!

Blogger of the Day: Ginny at Vegan in the Freezer

The Bean of the Month is the Anasazi Bean! Sweet Anasazi Beans are named for the ancient Pueblo culture known for its fantastically complex dwellings such as Cliff Palace at Mesa Verde and the White House Ruins at Canyon de Chelly, for its intricate pictographs, and for its advanced agriculture. Everything about the Pueblo peoples' lives was dramatic...their homes, their climate, even these red and white beanbeauties. Sumptuously delicious in any Southwest or Mexican dish, they also make the best tasting burgers! Arizona vegan Ginny knows exactly how to handle them...her Crispy Anasazi Burgers are simply brilliant! All of her sandwichy stacks are irresistible...how does she create so much yumfulness in a bun? And there's more than just burgers, so drop in and see what she's got coming out of the Freezer tonight!  ;)

Don't miss Ginny's freezer pops!

Did you know you can...
Take full moon walks and study astronomy in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico
Climb to a ceremonial tower at Hovenweep, Utah
Go on special backcountry hikes at Mesa Verde, Colorado

Happy Vegan Burger Day!

Blogger of the Day: Carrie at Carrie on Vegan

Carrie's one of the most inspiring people on the planet! She earned an MBA in marketing and entrepreneurialism from USC then switched gears and got a Master of Public Health degree so she's got serious nutrition smarts and business wizardry too! Carrie faced some major challenges along the way including thyroid cancer about a year or so ago, which she has mindfully evolved through to vibrant health! She creates superyumful recipes for her blog Carrie on Vegan, plus she manages an app called Vegan Delish and now she's thinking about writing a cookbook! Most importantly she's kind and caring and compassionate, guiding her readers towards healthier living on every level. See what I mean...totally inspiring!  :)

And she's got burgers! Lots and lots of beanboosted burgers, my favorite kind!  :)

Beyond burgers...

Carrie writes for Our Hen House too! You can listen to their interview with Carrie (it starts about 6 minutes into the podcast).  :)

Take your pick...fried, baked or grilled burgers? Beany burgers or tofu-y burgers? Do you like to get your recipes from smartphone apps or ebooks or printed cookbooks? What food/recipes apps do you use?  :)

Happy Barley Day!

Blogger of the Day: Lee at The Vegan Version

I am such a cheap date...take me on an evening trip to the local co-op and I'll be overthemoon happy especially if it ends with a superyumful meal! Our co-op store has it all...organic everything, fresh local fruits & veggies, my fave vegan bakery, vegan salads and sammies from the deli, sampling days (the best!) and a huge bulk section where you can buy boatloads of beans, grains and soup mixes for much less than bigbrand boxed versions. There's always something new to discover and today it's barley! One of the most healthful grains on the planet, it's high in fiber and B vitamins like niacin and it's ohsogood for breakfast! But today it's gonna be these spiced up mushroom burgers from Lee. She knows how to throw easy ingredients together to create downhome comfort foods, plus she whips up all sorts of worldlywonderful stuff like Lahmajun and Mexican Skillet Lasagna...and Arancini!  :)

Today's cheap date has to end in healthy burgers so bulkbin barley burgers it is!

And because Lee says "Everything is better wrapped in Phyllo"...

Do you cook with barley? Have you tried grain-based veggie burgers? Do you buy from bulk bins when you food shop? What's your favorite thing to do on a cheap date?  ;)

Happy Vegan Sliders Day!

Bloggers of the Day: Michelle and Matt at Thug Kitchen
Pubs: Tentatively titled The Official Thug Kitchen Cookbook, to be released in Fall 2014

Smart, spicy and searingly sarcastic, TK is a rated-R riot of plant-based rebelliousness. These mystery vegans liberally pepper their posts with plenty of F-words, S-words and a whole lotta MFs and SOBs thrown in for good measure...if you LYAO at "The Big Lebowski" or "Wolf of Wall Street" then this blog's for you. If you shy away from swearing, just hide your eyes from the profanity and focus instead on the photos and recipes. This stuff is licktheplate delicious. No-fuss cuisine that is nevertheless creative and colorful and full of appetite-zapping flavor. Saveur bestowed the 2013 Best New Blog Award upon Thug Kitchen and Gwyneth Paltrow grooves on it too so go take a peek. Put a penny in the swear jar if it makes you feel better.  ;)

Wikipedia credits the name "sliders" to the US Navy as an old nickname for the way burgers would slide back and forth over the greasy griddle when the ships would seesaw on the open sea. Ewww. It now refers to a miniburger, a munchable handful of yum perfect for game days or quicksnacks or packed up for roadtrips. If you're feeling adventurous add a superstack of veggies, pestos and spreads for a giant slider skyscraper. Have a contest to see who can build the tallest without tipping over and award the winner an official Burger Buckle!  ;)

What kind of burger would you shrink to a slider? Favorite toppings? Did you ever have a swear jar? Who filled it up the fastest?  ;)
