Happy National Nut Roast Day!

Blogger of the Day: Johanna at Green Gourmet Giraffe

Officially it's National Nut Day but since each lucky nut gets its own individual holiday, I'm dubbing it National Nut Roast Day...which gives me the pleasure of featuring Green Gourmet Giraffe!

I'm a relative newcomer to Johanna's blog so I'm still exploring her treasure trove of yumful recipes but one love I discovered we share is nut roasts! Not only has she developed dozens of delicious nut roasts, but she also features "A Neb at Nut Roast"* posts where you can learn of, share and discuss the wonders of this marvelous meal...what binders to use, which veggies pair well, how to sauce and sandwich up the leftovers if you have any! Give me a chunk of nut roast layered between two thick slabs of bread, bedded with veggies and dripping with sauce and I'm bouncing in roasty rapture...yumza!  :)

Beyond the roasts there's so much more...Johanna shares colorful notes and narratives on cooking, plus glimpses of her kitchen and garden in Melbourne and tales of her global gallivanting. She also provides plenty of advice and insights into ingredients, techniques and tools, as well as wit and wisdom on the joys and jangles of life. Johanna's recipes are easygoing, enticing and inspiring, and so is her writing...like wandering over to your favorite neighbor's house and joining in a casual chat on the porch on a lazy afternoon. Friendly peeps, lots of laughs and a side of music too...before you know it, many hours have pleasantly passed and it's almost past sundown! Time to hop up, run home and try one of Johanna's many irresistible dishes!  :)

Notes...
Many of the vegetarian roasts can be easily veganized!

*According to Johanna, "Neb is Scottish slang for having a peek, taking a look, a sticky beak. It literally means ‘nose’."

Happy Wombat Day too!

Happy Seitan Day!

Blogger of the Day: Jess at Thank God Bourbon Is Vegan

It's Halloween season and seitan has arrived! Seitan (actually pronounced say-tahn, or as awesome Isa says it, say-tan) is a savory meat sub made with vital wheat gluten. The VWG gives it that dense meaty texture that some people miss when they go vegan...and cons carnivores into thinking it's meat! You can make seitan yourself or buy it premade and flavored. If you're missing meatballs, meatloaf or any other meaty eats, seitan is a devilishly clever switch!  ;)

Animal loving angel Jess shares her seitan secrets and more hearty heavenly feasts.  :)

Sources for Vital Wheat Gluten...

King Arthur Flour Company

Which is your favorite meat substitute...seitan, tempeh or tofu? How do you like it served? Would you rather be an angel or a devil for Halloween?  ;)

Happy National Hot Dog Day!

Blogger of the Day: Angela at The Veracious Vegan

My brother is a HUGE baseball fan...he's on a mission to visit every MLB ballpark in the country and as many minor league ballparks as he can find too. He's also a ballpark frank fan so every summer I send him PETA's superfabulous lists of the most vegfriendly ballparks. Here are the 2014 lists...

They feature annual Top 5 Vegetarian-Friendly NFL Stadiums (2013) and Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly NBA Arenas (2013) lists too...many thanks PETA!

If you're on a nationwide tour of ballparks, you'll find boatloads of hot dog variations depending on what part of the country you're in. One of the most popular is the Chicago-style dog, which Angela has veganized deliciously! Angela is a certified Food for Life instructor for PCRM so her recipes are smartly healthy and smack full of yum! Plus she reviews popular and new-to-the-market products (including wine!) so you'll find plenty of inspiration and ideas. She recommends Field Roast franks for her recipe but any vegan dog will do.  :)
