Happy National French Bread Day!

Blogger of the Day: Ashley at The Unintentional Vegan
Pubs: Easy Holiday Recipes for the Compassionate Cook

French bread, also known as a baguette, is a long thin loaf with a fluffy inside and a lightcrispy outside. It'll melt you with senseless delight when eaten fresh, but it'll turn baseball bat hard after a day or so. Best way to avoid a jaw-busting baguette is to A. live above a French bakery (ummmmyes!) or B. make it yourself...that's the way to go! It's really easy and more than worth it, especially when you bite into a hunk still warm from the oven with melty vegan butter on top...yumza!  ;)

Ashley is a human bread baking machine...she lives to bake and loves to bake bread, especially if it's for sandwiches! She features a series called "Sandwich Queen" in which she veganizes many of Sandwich King Jeff Mauro's sammie recipes, creating vegan classics such as Tofu Po’ Boys and Chicago ‘Steakhouse’ Sandwiches. And then there's Build Your Own Panini Bar which is my idea of sandwich heaven. :)

What's your favorite fresh bakery bread? Do you bake your own? How do you top or fill a fresh loaf? How do you feel about French bread sandwiches?  ;)

  1. Yay! It's nice to see Ashley's blog featured here. It's one of my favorites.

I'm always hesitant about baking my own bread, but luckily, our Co-op has a really stellar bakery. So I'm able to get bread baked fresh that day. They have loads of variety, and the baguette is lovely. However, my favorite is their garlic sourdough, which has whole cloves of roasted garlic in it. We slice it, add a bit of vegan butter to each side, and put it on the grill. It makes a salad infinitely more exciting when there's grilled garlic bread on the side!
