Winter holidays mean heaps of sweets in any culture and cookies often take center stage. Pfeffernüsse are little balls of pepper and spice that are snowed over with a coat of powdered sugar and are found at feasts in Germany, Denmark and The Netherlands.
My Italian grandmother made a slightly similar cookie called a Tutu...or Tetu...I really don't know how to spell it but it's pronounced "dooDOO". They were spicy cocoa balls covered in a thin sugar glaze. I loved them but they were my brother's All Time Favorite Cookie and you did not want to be in his way when he was heading for them. He'd pile on a plateful, stuff his pockets and hide a stash in his room if he could. Gotta love the little cookie monster. ;)
As long as we're Pfeffernüssing and Tutuing let's whirl around the world today for a vegan Christmas cookie feast...yumza! :)
